Ovarian cysts?

I have been to the hospital now for two ultrasound scans because I have an ovarian cyst. It's on my left ovary. How can they tell if it is cancerous or not im just a bit concerned because I have cancer in the family. Im loosing sleep over it and the hospital won't tell me anything. I've got to go back now in six weeks for another scan.

All Advise it's much appriciated.

Thanks to everyone in advance

Ovarian cysts?
I had a lump on my thyroid gland and worried myself stupid , there is cancer in my family too.

I know its easy to say but you have to try and be realistic , they have treatment planned , share your worries with them , they are trained and there to help.

Mine was cancerous but quickly removed and now i take medication as my body no longer produces thyroxine.

from one who knows how you can worry good luck and share your worries with the dr/hospital
Reply:ask the Dr to take a sample as cancer is in the family=let him know that it is bothering you
Reply:A good rule of thumb is that if it was life threatening you would be in the hospital. If your doctor doesn't feel it's urgent youshouldn't worry
Reply:Hey, sweetie. I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. An ovarian cyst is caused by an egg that was not released properly into the fallopian tube, and attaches itself to the ovary. Because it's not a "foreign" cell, the body doesn't react as it would if it were a cancer. I know I'm not saying this right, but I've been there. They are very painful, but will resolve on their own.

Reply:i have a cyst, dont worry too much i also have cancer in my family at the moment i am just having regular scans,to keep an eye on it, they are very common, and can sometimes just go away, i was very worried too, mine has not gone away,on the scan they look for any changes, if is is growing or changing in any way,or with luck shrinking, good luck but the hospital should be telling you more, the only thing you can do regarding this is to ask questions they will then have to give you answers, ask questions like, the size what sort of cyst do they think it is ,and any other questions that are distressing you, and good luck, i am sure you will be alright.
Reply:I have ovarian cysts, even though they can worry you, if it was anything other than a cyst you would be called back a lot sooner than 6 weeks for another scan. If its just a cyst 6 weeks is about right. I have had a couple of cancer worries and both have turned out to be nothing to worry about. The trouble is when we don't know we imagine all sorts. Wish you good luck, you should talk to your doctor who will be only too pleased to put your mind at rest.
Reply:I am sorry, you can't tell. The hospital should be much more open and informative, it is your body. You might get some help from your GP who may already have more info from the hospital, or he could contact them. Usually it is possible, with a fair degree of confidence, to tell by scan alone if an ovarian lesion is malignant or benign.
Reply:Don't panic the majority of ovarian cysts are benign. I went thought the same thing i had my ovary removed at 21 it was very scary but I'm 26 now with a gorgeous 5 year old daughter. Good luck and take care xxx
