My best friend recently told me that her mom got this big cyst from shaving under her arm and it is infected?
I am sorry to be a party-spoiler but there are many reasons for such a cyst to appear some are very serious some are really nothing much except an ingrown hair.

Reply:Does she shave her under arms regularly?? It could of been an ingrown hair under her armpit. I have heard of that before but not the other. If you shave under your arms everyday with a good razor that shouldn't happen.
Reply:I agree it may have been an ingrown hair.

Shaving our armpits is actually such an unnatural thing so I wouldn't be too surprised.
Reply:She has a boil.

It is usually caused by a small, ingrown hair. The hair aggrevates the epidermis and the body see's it as a foreign body, so fights it, producing puss.

There is one immediate thing she can do which is to get a strong torch, tweezers and get someone to find the hair to remove.

It may be painful.

Squeezing the boil and spurting the puss out will usually expell the hair at the same time. Get a tissue to wipe up the exudite, puss, to see if the hair is in it. Remember it may be so small and hard to see. If it is not on the tissue, squeeze the boil again and the hair will pop out.

This can happen to anybody. And your chances of getting boils is massive if you were previously waxing.

To prevent anymore ingrownn hair, use a stiff loafah in the shower to break the thin layer of sking that grows over the hair fairly quickly.

Deal with the boil now, although it may be painful. Even pricking it with a sterilised needle to release the puss first. Because boils can turn into nasty abscesses which needs to be lanced in hospital under GA.
Reply:A cyst like this can be created by infecting the area under the arm and it healing up on the outside first and bacteria inside.

Washing with antiseptic soap or not shaving is the answer to this.
Reply:I have just seen this in surgery last week... i am a med student. i can tell you that on the surface of the skin a lot of germs grow and sometimes one "breaks the barrier" and enters underneath the skin, like at the root of a hair. if you rupture it there is the risk that the infection will spread in all the area and you get an extended nasty infection and you have to take antibiotics cause it could get worse like fever and more. the best solution is either to keep that area extra clean and antiseptic like put a bandage with alcohol or betadine. or better go to the doctor and they will evacuate the pus and clean that area in better condition... anyway to avoid another infection it is best that for at least a month she doesn t use a razor... waxing hurts more but it s safer...
Reply:This happens a lot. To prevent, shave in the direction your hair grows, dry completely, and dont put deodorant on immediately after shaving-this is the biggest problem.
