Cysts on Ovaries?

My girlfriend has developed a simple cyst about 1.9 cm on her right ovary. Just how serious is this? Could it grow or keep spreading? What can i do to help? This whole thing has me pretty worried.

Cysts on Ovaries?
The ovaries develop small cysts each month, but they shrink by themselves through the monthly cycle. Her cyst is pretty small right now and it is possibly just one of those monthly ones. However, there is a possibility that it could continue to grow and rupture once it has gotten larger~that is pretty painful but not life threatening. Many women get ovarian cysts that grow beyond the normal size and if it continues to worry both of you ~ her doctor can do an ultrasound in a few weeks and that way you will know if it is still there and getting larger or it disappeared on its own! I suffer from them regularly and the first time I had one rupture they thought that it was appendicitis~this is how I found out that I had them! Also, a lot of different birth control pills help block the growth of cysts (even the montly ones sometimes) due to the fact that the pill stops ovulation and this is what makes the cyst in the first place.
Reply:This is a common malady among women. It can cause quite a bit of discomfort, and if it bursts it is VERY painful and she may end up in the ER, but it will not led to surgery, they will only be able to give her meds to lessen the pain. But once it bursts, it is over - no more problems.

Good luck to her,

Reply:It is very common, alot of women have them. Usually they increase in size around a womans ovulation time, and then shrink back down after it. If she is worried have her go see a gyn.
