I found out that I have a 6.5 ovarian cyst yesterday and they need to look more into it and i was wondering what will they do with that big of a cyst. And this cyst isnt on the ovary. its in it. and im not in any pain at all. i have my usual cramps and sharp pains around my period but im not in any discomfort at all. Will they removie it? will it make me infertile???? just some questions and concerns and i just wanted some feedback. thank you\
Question about ovarian cysts?
Theyre some pretty tough and important questions. I think it's best to ask your doctor as he knows your case specfically and he will give you the best advice. It's normal to have concerns like those so I think thats the best method.
Reply:you have -2- ovaries...if you lose one you still have another and no it will not make you infertile....as long as you have one ovary....if they have to remove it, they will probably do a laproscopic...4 small incisions (one in your belly button) and pull the ovary out...you'll be fine...(unless it's cancerous...then theres chemo, radiation or whatever your Dr's feel is best for you...but the ovary needs to come out first).
Reply:The doctors will want to run some painless but specific tests so they can determine if the cyst needs to be removed surgically or if it can be treated with medication.
Not all cysts cause pain or discomfort.
My little sister had a cyst that made her look like she was 3 to 4 months pregnant. The doctors simply took a sonogram of the cyst, ran a couple of more tests, and prescribed her a medication that over a few months got rid of the cyst completely.
Myself, I have delt with ovarian cysts for about 20 years. I have only had one that required treatment. I took a prescription and everything was fine.
On the flip side, if the doctors deem it is necessary to remove that one ovary in order to get rid of the cyst, then you still have one more ovary and you will not be sterile. It could cut your chances in half of becoming pregnant, but then again if you have a cyst in your ovary that requires the ovary to be removed, then there is a good likelihood that it is not functioning properly anyway.
As always, it is best to talk openly with your doctor. However, if you are uncomfortable asking your doctor questions like this then it would be in your best interest to find a new doctor. Look at it this way, when you buy a car you don't just pick one out of a group with out asking questions, test driving it, etc. When it comes to doctors you have every right to have an initial consultation with the doctor to make sure you are comfortable and feel safe with that doctor. So shop around and find that right doctor for you.
Good luck and relax!
Reply:Since I work in the operating room, I can tell you a little bit about what you are going to expect to happen. If the cyst on the ovary is fribrous they usually remove that ovary. Or if the cyst is fluid filled they would just drain it, and leave it intact. But if they find that something is wrong with that ovary they will remove it because the surgeon doesn't want that ovary to cause any complications after the procedure, or in the future. You can still be happy and fertile with only just one ovary. I have heard from surgeons feedback that their patients have been able to have children and live productive lives after having one of their ovaries removed. If they have not told you already you will have irregular periods from time to time or mild bleeding (or spotting) after the surgery. I hope this is helpful for you. Good luck to you.....
