I had a son in February and noticed a small lump (about the size of a small pea) under one armpit at 6 weeks postpartum. I was breastfeeding at the time, and I noticed this simply because I could see the difference from one armpit when compared to the other. My doctor said it was a sebaceous cyst and had me see a specialist who said the same thing. I fear this may have primarily been due to the fact that I am only 28, but I also have a severe case of hypochondria. Anyways, I was scheduled to have an ultrasound (at my request), but the lump went away after a few weeks. Now I am pregnant again (6 months along) and noticed this same lump formed again right before my last prenatal appointment (almost 2 months ago). I didn't bring it up at that point because I saw the same PAC at my OBGYN's office who said it was a cyst. I am currently waiting for an appointment with my midwife, but it's not until next Friday (28th). Can this kind of cyst stick around this long? Of course I fear the worst.
Do sebaceaous cysts stick around this long???
Yes, those kinds of cysts can go away and the return again periodically. If you really want to make sure, then go get a needle biopsy done of it, to set your mind at ease.
Reply:follow up with your doctor.
Reply:I have trouble with cysts. The first one I had removed left a HUGE scar. Of course I was scared it was cancer, but it was just a cyst (it was biopsied). Now, I have one on my shoulder and it's the exact same thing. My doctor and I have decided to leave it there.
You should continue to follow up with your doctor as the opportunity presents itself, but it probably really is a cyst.
Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck! :)
Reply:I also had a sebaceaous cyst on my back that lasted over a year. It also would decrease and increase in size periodically. I eventually went to the hospital and had it removed.
It's a simple out-patient procedure. They simply numb the area, make a small incision and remove the cyst. They will biopsy the cyst at your request, but most cases they are simply caused by an infected ingrown hair.
The variation in size is caused by the body's immune system. When the white blood cells attack the infected area, the cyst increases in size, and can become discolored and tender.
Although they can go away on their own, it is always a safe measure to have them removed and tested.
The fact that they seem to worsen when you are pregnant is most likely caused by the change in your body's PH levels during pregnancy. This can cause an abnormally quick reaction to infections by your body's immune system.
Reply:I've had a marble sized one on my leg for the last 32 years...so I guess they stick around.
The Doc told me he can remove it easily but it's harmless unless it gets bigger or irritated. Actually I forgot about it until I read this question.
Rest your weary mind. Good luck with the kids!
